Your Bio

First of ALL: THANK YOU for visiting this website, which is solely established for fellow photographers.

• I show, what which equipment can do.
• I show, what a certain technique can do.

Selected photos from the smugmug galleries will be published in the 2 books:
"Hwy 101 and byways" and
"From Anchorage to Cabo San Lucas - 5000 miles of Pristine Pacific Coast"

Fellow Photographers might get some help in choosing their equipment and applying certain photo techniques to improve their photographic skills.
"A picture tells more than a thousand words" - nothing is truer than this, especially in the field of photography, and nowhere else can photos be seen so excellent like on Smugmug.
Of course I check all the major sites that do reviews. I use those reviews to pre-scan the properties of a camera or a lens. A decision though can only be made after an extensive test drive, and what I show here in the hardware part is nothing else than reports of my test drives. I hope, it can help your decision ;-)

My partners and myself run a couple of photography related Websites.
See here the photos of the day from Fotopedia, a quality site I really like, which reflects some of my ideas about the UNESCO World Heritafe project I have in mind:

Generally I do not sell prints. During my stay at Cannon Beach I was asked, whether I can make some of my work available, well, here it is - if you see a $-tag on a photo, you can order it. Drop me an email: V.Schenk@gmail.com
I am available for complete jobs and can assure you, you will be amazed by the results!

"The Great DSLE Shootout" is now on for more than 6 month, while taken more than 20 000 shots and traveling about 10 000 miles per air and 5000 miles per van.
"The Great DSLE Shootout" is in its last phase, all DSLE are used together and in comparison with Pro Equipment. You can always have EXIF data available as previously described, however to make it easier to see which camera used for a shot, I left file description with the photos.
Cameras with file#s used:
A) Pro equipment:
1) NIKON D700 Full Frame, Files start with 700xxxx
I use the D700 for:
- its outstanding noise handling, you can shoot night scenes at ISO 3200 and still get clean images (at least my previous D700 did - see special report about issues after inspection through Nikon Canada)
- Its actual 24x36mm sensor size, allowing the use of a wide spectrum of excellent Nikon and Nikon mount lenses without a crop factor
- its unsurpassed handling, NO other camera allows fast shooting as the D700 (+ upwards). Ideal for sports, wildlife, kids portraits..
I shoot wildlife with the long manual Tamrons + Nikon Autofocusing Teleconverter 1.6x - this 25 year old AF rig allows FASTER AF than conventional AF teles....
Lenses:
Sigma 20mm f1.8
Kiron 24mm f2
Nikon 35mm f1.4
Sigma 24-70mm f2.8
Nikon 135mm f2
Tamron AD-2 :
17mm f3.5
60-300mm Macro
180mm f2.5
300mm f2.8
500mm f8 Mirror

2) Olympus E3 (Will be followed by the E5)
I shoot the E3 because of the following properties:
- The best and fastest Autofocus Standard Zoom in the industry - one of the few AF lenses I trust
- Internal image stabilisation (IIS)
- Rugged, dust and splash proof
- almost every MF lens can be adapted to the 4/3 mount
- IIS and 2x crop with long tele lenses for wildlife allows me shooting up to 1000mm effective handheld - priceless.
- Amazingly good JPEGs - if you are time constraint or just don't like the time consuming RAW developing process, this is the camera for you!
Verdict: An E3/5 with a 12-60mm 2.8-4 lens is the ideal reporter camera!
I use the following lenses with the E3 - please understand, that all lenses have a 2x crop factor, meaning a 24mm f2 wideangle will be a 48mm fast "Normal" lens
Sigma 20mm f1.8
Kiron 24mm f2
Nikon 35mm f1.4
Contax Carl Zeiss 85mm f1.4 -- an excellent 170mm 1.4 Portraiture lens
Nikon 135mm f2
Tamron AD-2 :
60-300mm Macro
180mm f2.5
300mm f2.8
500mm f8 Mirror

B) DSLE (Digital Single Lens Electronic Viewfinder - this is the terminology I use, as none of the so far used terminology hits the nail)
What I did not read in any reviews yet is the following advantage of all DSLEs:
The lens rear element/camera flange distance is not determined - and extended - by a mirror box. That allows for an optimal lens design. Imagine, a lens designer creates an optimal lens for a given sensor size. That theorethical OPTIMAL lens will not allow a mirror box "extension", but of course with a SLR or DSLR now you have to artificially extend the flange distance, and your lens will have less than optimal theorethical properties. That was the background, which manifested the fame and legacy of Leica and Contax Rangefinder lenses. Here is much to expect considering new HQ lenses. The lower disance is also the reason, why SLR lenses can be adapted to almost all of them...
Sony has the smallest distance with only 26mm
APSc-sized sensor
1) Samsung NX10
Samsung deserves the merit being the first manufacturer to offer a compact APSc camera which looks like a miniature Mamiya and actually has everything a DSLR offers, just in a smaller form factor. I bought it with the excellent 30mm f2 lens, a good combination. It shoots nice photos right out of the camera, the video is good as well. I used the NX10 for a long time to document the journey per video and shot it alongside the D700 with very good results. I can recommend this camera, seems to be the best bang for the buck.. especially as prices deteriorate pretty soon due to Samsung's non existent marketing. The AMOLED screen is industry's best I like the camera but doubt that Samsung will have success with it. They just can't market high end photographic equipment the same way like refrigerators.. It is lacking an IIS, so you won't find some long tele lenses here
Lenses used (1.5x crop factor)
Samsung 30mm f2 AF and with adapters:
Sigma 20mm f1.8
Kiron 24mm f2
Nikon 35mm f1.4
Contax Carl Zeiss 85mm f1.4 -- an excellent 1.4 Portraiture lens
Nikon 135mm f2
Tamron AD-2 :
180mm f2.5

2) SONY NEX3
Sony created quite a splash with the consequent design of the NEX Series around the sensor size.
I integrated a NEX3 with 16mm -- 24mm 2.8 lens into my equipment, which works very well. Just check out the photos of the Cologne Dome. That day I just had this camera with me and an Olympus E-PL1 with an adapted Zeiss Contax 90mm f2.8 for street shooting with me..
The rear screen on the NEX gets easily scratched. A solution like the E3, or brother A55 shows how, you just have to be able, to fold the screen inwards to have it protected.
The handling of the A55 is preferred menu-wise, Sony released an update, which can be downloaded and is a little bit better. The hand grip of the NEX5 gives a bit firmer grip, I did not care for the NEX5 AVCHD video capabilities, as it is no video camera anyway. I shoot video with the VG-10.
The NEX cameras also have a very good A-mount to E-mount adapter which allows (slow) Autofocus and use of 25 year old Minolta AF lenses, which can be purchased cheap.
One of the reasons I decided for the NEX system was, that I could use all my excellent Contax G lenses with this camera with excellent results - check the Cannon Beach photos!
Lenses used:
Sony 16mm -- 24mm 2.8 (Very Good) + manual lenses (~1.5 crop factor) with adaptor:
Sigma 20mm f1.8
Kiron 24mm f2
Nikon 35mm f1.4
Contax Carl Zeiss 85mm f1.4 -- an excellent 170mm 1.4 Portraiture lens
Nikon 135mm f2
Tamron AD-2 :
60-300mm Macro
180mm f2.5

Contax G lenses:
28mm f2.8
35mm f2.8
90mm f2.8

SONY and MINOLTA A-mount lenses with AF function

3) SONY A55
(Sony uses the terminology SLT for Single Lens Translucent Mirror).
Canon used this technology years ago - without success. With the excellent electronic viewfinder and a great 16MP sensor (appx 1/3 is used for signal transmitting) the A55 delivers outstanding files.
Sony seems to have a winner here. The A55 came late into the shootout, as in the beginning it was only available with the kit zoom, and I refuse to pay 100$ for a Tupperware Type lens, which does in no way match the camera's quality.
I choose instead a 30mm f1.4 Sigma, which delivers. Another winner!
